Slayers of Old is the newest standalone fantasy novel by Jim C. Hines. It’s an interesting look into what happens when the heroes grow old and retire. Temple Finn used to be a legend in supernatural circles. Now, at almost a hundred years old, he is reliant on his two roommates to keep the days straight. He could accept getting old but hated the idea that his age was destroying his family home. They’re tied together, and both falling apart. Annette and Jenny moved in with Temple to help the old wizard out, and opened a bookstore in the front part of his Salem, MA house.
Being retired from the world-saving business doesn’t stop trouble from finding these three housemates. When someone starts teaching young people in the neighborhood how to summon ancient creatures and plans to open a portal to the underworld, the three retirees must team up to save the world one last time.
Slayers of Old may not appeal to younger readers, but for this middle-aged mom, it was absolutely delightful to see the realities of getting old threaded throughout a fun fantasy adventure book. This book has so many good, quotable lines, and the banter is delightful. It’s not quite a cozy fantasy, but it definitely has feel good vibes, and everything is wrapped up beautifully at the end of the book.
