Nine Princes in Amber is the first book in Chronicles of Amber series by the legendary author Roger Zelazny. His name is synonymous with fantasy, and his Amber novels are by far the most recognizable in the genre. I admired his books as a teenager, and am ashamed to admit I hadn’t read any of them before. That makes this chance to review the audiobook even more important to me. According to Audible, readers will be graced with a new audiobook from the series each month, beginning with this one on July 28, 2026. It’s a fabulous opportunity for old fans and new readers to delve into this rich world.

Waking up in a private hospital with no memory of who he is, and only foggy memories of a car accident, Carl Corey knows he isn’t safe. He extracts himself from the situation with cold efficiency, interrogating a staff member to learn his name and the name and address of the sister who supposedly checked him into the facility. At her house, he bluffs his way through a conversation with her, and slowly remembers that his name is really Corwin, one of nine princes of Amber. His sister has been keeping an eye on him for their brother, Eric, who is about to crown himself king without any true opposition.

As soon as he remembers his siblings, their relationships, and what’s at stake, Corwin charges toward a confrontation with the brother who tried to kill him. As soon as he steps on the path toward Amber, their relationships world he knows slowly morphs into something more magical, and he learns our Earth is just a shadow. If he can retrieve all of his memories, he can walk the shadows home.

Nine Princes in Amber is only the beginning of the story, and it ends leaving readers wanting more. Eric Jason Martin is an excellent narrator, and he voices a fantastic Prince Corwin. I can’t wait to listen to the other audiobooks as they are released. The next audiobook, The Guns of Avalon, is slated for publication August 25, 2026.
